PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Well, the 2015 ski season is winding down, and the Club, from everything I've heard, had a good time at Steamboat with lodging convenient to the lift, lots of good times, and fresh snow towards the end. the Hodgeses and the Fergusons are currently on or have just completed spring skiing trips to, respectively, Park City and Heavenly, Geoff just returned from a trip to Mammoth, and these are only the members on their own trips whom I know about.
Me? That's another story: I got hurt again: Broke my right hip during my eighth day on the mountain when my Alta season's pass hadn't even yet paid for itself. Basically, I sprained a ligament (I think) in my left leg in the process of removing my new, custom boot in the parking lot on the second day of the trip, skied for the next several days in spite of it (BIG mistake), was favoring the leg and not making good right turns, fell to the side on a hard combination lock which I had in my pocket at hip level, bounced on it a couple of times, slid fifteen feet downhill on hard snow, and couldn't get up. I now have a titanium nail in the femur to match the titanium nail in my tibia (from New Zealand). Call me "Titanium Man." Will I be skiing again? Hopefully, if I don't have serious bone density issues, but I will need a lot more rehabilitation and re-development of my lower extremity muscle groups than I got the last time. In the 20/20 vision of hindsight, four months (I had had surgery to my foot and ankle in August), was too little time to fully get in shape for skiing.
Well, the votes have been counted, and the announcement of the destination for next year's trip (which I hope to be on) will be made at the April General Membership Meeting to be held, less than two weeks away, at Schooner's (not Seven Palms). Also, the meeting, on April 2, is the annual election for Board Members. I am running again for President but would welcome a challenge. Jonathan Carr and Roy Manzoku, whose terms are expiring, will also be running again, but no so for Cathy Lau. We need new people on the Board, and we also need volunteers to replace Cathy and Larry Thurston who have both advised that they will not be continuing on the Trip Committee. Jonathan cannot coordinate next year's trip with only one remaining member, Take Toma, on the Committee. Now is the time to step up. If you are interested in serving on the Board and/or on the Trip Committee for next year, please email Jonathan: jonathan@hawaiisnowskiclub.com .
I would like to thank Cathy and Larry for their work on the Trip Committee and Cathy, also, for the hikes and excursions she arranged for the Club during her two years on the Board. The Club cannot and will not thrive without members willing to contribute a little of their time, effort, and ideas to make it so.
See you at the meetings and activities.
A hui hou,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
and
BOARD ELECTION
SCHOONER'S RESTAURANT
57 ARIZONA MEMORIAL DRIVE
PEARL HARBOR
April 2
(Thursday) 5:30 PM
As Seven Palms, the Ski Club's General Membership Meeting
"home" for a number of years now, is currently closed for renovations and will
be opening, we don't know when, under new management (The Dixie Grill) and with
a new name, our April General Membership Meeting will be held at Schooner's
Restaurant, Pearl Harbor. This is the meeting where we traditionally vote for
the coming year's Board, and you should have just received the call for
nominations. At the meeting, we will also be announcing the winning
destination for 2016 Hawaii Ski Week. As we have had a number of Pau Hanas at
Schooner's and even held a General Membership Meeting there once before (I think
the last time the golf course restaurant was closed for renovations and undergoing the name change to
Seven Palms from Sam Sneads), most of you should know where it is. For
those of you who don't, turn off Kamehameha Highway towards the water as if you were going to
visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right on the inner road (Arizona Memorial
Drive) and drive .25 mile. After you go under the Ford Island overpass, you will
see the restaurant on your left (ocean side) with plenty of free parking. See
you there.
