PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
As I sit down to write my last President's message for this term of office, most of you have returned from snow country to Honolulu. In addition to our sponsored trips to Hakuba, Japan and Sun Valley, Idaho, many of us, in smaller numbers or individually, showed up at locations including, but not limited to, North Lake Tahoe, Panorama, Jackson Hole, Mammoth, Park City, and Alta with, widely varying snow coverage but, always, lots of fun. If you want to see pictures from some of these places, go to the Hawaii Ski Club's Facebook page, which has been created and is being maintained by Susan, and enjoy. As far as I know, nobody got hurt this year, and this (absence of hurt) is what Geof has always used as his definition of a "successful" trip.
We are currently in the midst of wrapping up voting for the location(s) of next year's trip(s), and the question has arisen, with a little confusion and controversy, as to what should constitute a "good" location for the Club. First, in my opinion, and I know this is shared by several of the members who have worked on past trips, it should be at a resort area where there is ample accommodation for skiers/boarders of all levels. Jackson Hole, for example, with it's predominantly high intermediate and expert terrain, would not be a good "fit" for the Club. Second, it should be at a resort or cluster of resorts where we all stay in the same hotel/condominium or in buildings which are within a short walking distance to one another and where meetings/parties for the entire group can be accommodated. If the Club is not going to stay, pretty much together, why have Club trip? Third, the accommodations should be slopeside or, failing that, at an area, like Sun Valley, in which there is frequent and ample transportation available. Fourth, and this is "complicated," the cost should be "reasonable" from the standpoint of what we have been paying in the past and the current "cost climate." Fifth, to the extent possible, transportation from Honolulu should be straightforward without multiple connections and the need to split the group into separate flights and busses. Trips to countries such as Japan or Europe, might be nice once in a while, or considered for an additional trips but, in most years, the locations fitting these criteria for Hawaii Ski Week will be on the North American continent. A variety of restaurants, shopping, and activities for non skiers/boarders are also factors, though not the most important ones, which should be considered.
Talking about trips, I want to take this opportunity to recognize Susan Murata, who is finally stepping down as Trip Committee Chair, for her efforts in negotiating with travel agents, putting together, sometimes with an actual Committee and sometimes not, our trips for the past five years. I also want to recognize Vice President Kevin Okawa who, although he will continue to take care of our tee shirt sales, is stepping down from the Vice Presidency and the Board: Kevin, as you may or may not know, has been a "right hand" for Susan on many trip-related issues, has created the Ski Club logo tags for our recent trips, and has lent his computer graphics skills to put our new logo in usable form, and has been invaluable in coordinating nominations/elections and keeping "you guys" informed and the "wheels running" during my periods of absence. Also deserving of a huge manhole is Anita Hodges who took over the coordination of the Sun Valley trip when Sandy Herron, who began as the "point person," returned to the Mainland with a new job and was unable to continue. We need to give Anita, especially those of you who went to Sun Valley, a round of applause.
Finally, I again want to urge those of you who might have been considering joining the Board to help plan our monthly activities and work on next year's trip(s) to step forward by giving your name to me or Kevin. Voting for next year's Board is only a week away.
Aloha,

APRIL PAU HANA AT "LISA'S
HOUSE"
3250 Ualena Street
Honolulu, HI 96819
April 12 (Friday) 4:30 P.M.
With a name like
Lisa's House you may think this may be a Korean Bar. NOT! This low key
establishment located in the airport industrial area has been classified by many
as a "Gastropub". WELL MAYBE! Having been there many times, I have
to admit the food is excellent for bar food but if lacks the flashiness of more
frequented gastropubs like Pint and Jigger. Definitely a blue collar older
crowd in for the food, pool and darts with prices that reflect that. The
location is convenient, just off the H-1, and the parking is plentiful. Happy
hour is from 4:30 to 7:00 PM with discounted drinks and low priced pupus.
However, I do recommend ordering off their menu. Go online to read
the Yelp reviews, and that should peak your curiosity to check out this place
that I'm sure you have probably not heard about. Hope to see you there!

POLO IN MOKULEIA
HAWAII POLO CLUB
VIP
Reserved Seating
April 21 (Sunday) Noon
The Hawaii Polo Club has offered up to twenty Ski Club Members free (last year it was $15.00) seating in the VIP area of the private clubhouse for the polo match on Sunday April 21. Matches are scheduled to begin at 2 P.M., but the gates normally open at 12:00 noon, and the match, itself, is frequently preceded by sky divers parachuting into the field and/or other events. Drinks and food may be purchased but, unless there is a change from last year, you should be welcome to bring your own drinks and pupus: Please don't bring large coolers as space in the VIP area is limited. More details will be provided as they become available.
As we will need to secure the tickets and parking passes in advance and determine the best way to distribute them, please let me know of your interest and the number of tickets you will need by emailing me: pres@hawaiiwnowskiclub.com
To get to the polo field from Waikiki or the airport, take the H-1 West, then H-2 North toward Mililani and Wahiawa. When H-2 ends, keep going straight past Schofield Barracks on the left, down the hill and across a bridge. Keep left towards Waialua and Dillingham Ranch. From here you'll drive about 20 minutes along a two lane highway with mostly fields on both side. When you come to the traffic circle, continue through it and go under the bridge towards Mokuleia. Drive about three miles, and the polo field will be on your right side.
