PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

The North American ski season may be winding down, but it's not over yet.  I got back from Utah only a little over a week ago, and 35 inches of fresh fell on Little Cottonwood Canyon right after I left (bad timing?)   As you read this, Kevin Okawa, Susan Murata, and Jon & Momi Kleinschmidt, one half of our Board,  are on their way to or have already arrived at Sun Peaks for a late season "skication," and that's only the members I presently know about.   For most of us, however, it's over and time to get the Club's non season activities back in gear.

As you can see from the schedule, we already have a couple of Pau Hana's planned, the first as early as this coming Friday.  Also, we have some volunteering activities in the planning stages,  have the first General Membership Meeting with Board elections coming up next week, and we will be beating the bushes for other activities to fill out our schedule until we hit the slopes again.   Shall we go back to the North Shore to see a polo game or two,  out on some hikes or bike rides as in previous years,  kayak to the  Mokuluas again, go back to Hawaii Kai for 4th of July (which wasn't that well attended last year)?  I don't know, and we welcome your thoughts and suggestions    You are all welcome to  give me a call (224-1065) or send me an email (pres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com).  Better still, if you are willing to take the lead in coordinating an activity, we would really, r-e-a-l-l-y welcome it.

Also, there is still time to join the Board if you want to have more of a say in what we do and how we do it.  We are very much "in the market" for fresh ideas (not to mention fresh faces at our meetings). Contact Kevin (vicepres@hawaiisnowskiclub.com).

Finally, at the beginning of Message, I was careful to specify "North American" ski season.  When it's summer in North America, the South American, Oceanian, and Australasian ski seasons are just getting underway.   I know a couple that goes down to Chile every year, and this August,  I will be taking my 15th or 16th (I've lost count) trip down to Queenstown, New Zealand for 10 days.  It's a little pricey to get down there and back (about $1,500 this year) and the hotels expensive (about $200.00 a night for the convenient ones unless you're willing to go to a backpackers' hostel), but after you've taken care of that,  the American Dollar still buys a little more for you than it does here, the scenery is magnificent, the people and atmosphere wonderful, and although the ski areas are a bit smaller than those of most North American resorts, it is good to not have to wait for another 12 months get back on the slopes.  I already have my reservations, but if you are interested in coming, let me know, and I'll give you the "skinny" on how it all works.

See you at the activities and our upcoming General Membership Meeting.

Aloha,

TOBY

UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:

EAT THE STREET
March 30 (Friday)
5:00 PM to 9:00 PM

For just over a year now, 30 to 40 lunchwagons gather on the last Friday evening of every month in Ka'kaako resulting in a high concentration and variety of food and drink vendors in one area - something for everyone!    This month's event is back to their original home in Ka’kaako, at 555 South Street (Behind Restaurant Row - block bordered by Keawe, South, Halekauwila, and Pohukaina Streets), for one of the classic themes that everybody can get behind, ”Japan”.
This month, all the vendors were asked to provide at least one Japanese/ Asian inspired dish for the event. Being such a broad theme, you never really know what you might be in for. It will be very exciting to see what kinds of dishes the trucks will come out with this time around. Though many vendors sell beverages, it may be wise to BYOB.

Please plan to meet at the corner of Keawe and Pohukaina at 5:00 PM so we can claim a spot to sit and eat. If you can't find us or are late you can call Geof @ 330-7432 for directions or information.
TIPS:
- It's CASH ONLY (and the ATM usually runs out of money)
- Come early to find parking & avoid main rush/crowd/running out of food
- bring a chair/blanket and make your own picnic
- come with friends so you guys can share food and try more to eat
- the longest line isn't always the best food
- doesn't always have good lighting (when it goes into the night)

SEAHUNT AT  THE WAIKIKI AQUARIUM
March 31 (Saturday)

The Hawaii Ski Club has been supporting the Waikiki Aquarium with much needed (and much appreciated) manpower during their annual fund raising evening concert series and during occasional community and educational events, such as this one, an ocean awareness program for children, held on their premises. Volunteers are assisting with such tasks as setting up and taking down tents,  tables,  and chairs; hanging posters; policing entrances; emptying trash containers; serving food; and helping to supervise ongoing activities.  Although it is too late to sign up for this event, please contact Christie Foytich (alohalii@hotmail.com) or me if you are interested in volunteering for future events.

Due to our skiing "adventures," this will be only the second "formal" General Membership Meeting of 2012. It will include our annual election of Board Members for the coming year and the second showing of the Big Sky video (for people like me who weren't around for the first showing----I was off skiing).  Although the meeting doesn't begin until 6:00 P.M., come before 5:30 P.M. in order to beat the deadline for ordering the Sunset Specials, two complete dinners for $20.00.
