PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
In case you didn't receive Kevin's email on or around March 6, next year's Hawaii Ski Week will be at Big Sky, Montana (the winner with 29 votes). The second trip will be to Big White in British Columbia, Canada (25 votes). Steamboat Springs came in a respectable 3rd (21 votes), but "no cigar." Believe it or not, thanks to the ongoing and untiring work of our Trips Committee Chair, Susan Murata, her late season "commando raid" on Big Sky with Vice President Kevin Okawa, and Board Member Wayne Fujihara's discussions with a long time contact of his at Big White, we already have a date for Big Sky, January 27 - February 4th, and possible dates for the Big White trip with departures on either March 9 or March 16, the ultimate choice of date depending on which one the majority of you would prefer. An email will be sent out in a few days to determine how many might be interested in going on the second trip and which of the two possible dates would be preferable.
By the time you receive this Newsletter, I'm sure that the 2011 Northen Hemisphere ski season is over for most of us. Following Hawaii Ski Week at Telluride, 23 members of the Club journeyed to Snowmass in February (see below), Gordon Ng as well as Anita and Bill Hodges went to Park City, Jon and Momi Kleinschmidt went to Whistler, Geof spent a week in Utah going (and dragging me) to various locations (there are 10 areas within easy driving distance of the Salt Lake City airport), Kevin and Susan took advantage of an unexpected airfare reduction to speed off to Montana to "re-con" next year's Hawaii Ski Week venue, Big Sky, Jenna, who missed Hawaii Ski Week this year (to Mike Basso's immense disappointment because he was gunning for her in NASTAR), went to Whitefish, Montana (the former Big Mountain), and I spent a whole 34 days (count 'em) in Utah, skiing principally at Alta where my season's pass pays for itself in 10 days (Ahhhh retirement!!!!). I was careful, above, to say Northern Hemisphere because the Southern Hemisphere season, i.e. South America, New Zealand, and Austraila, will be beginning in a couple of months. Any takers?
As you can see from the above schedule, we are "back in business" with off
(ski) season activities.
If you haven't already voted by email, come to Sam
Sneads next Thursday night for the first, formal General Meeting of the year and
Board vote. Come even if you have already voted by email, listen to the results
of Susan's and Kevin's trip to Big Sky and preliminary plans for next year's
trip, maybe more information on Big White, and share your "war stories" from
Telluride, Snowmass, and other trips with your tablemates. I
heard enough "war stories" last night at our March Board Meeting to start
a book.
Aloha,
TOBY
UPCOMING SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Sam Sneads Tavern at the Navy Marine Golf
course
Thursday, April 7
This will be the first "formal" General Membership Meeting for 2011 and the time for Board elections. Come to the meeting and/to vote----if you haven't already done so, by that time, via email. Also, we already have preliminary information (besides the dates) on the trips for next year and can share this with you. Finally, remember to come before 5:30 if you want to take advantage of the dinner specials.
VOLUNTEERING AT THE WAIKIKI AQUARIUM
April 9, April 16
The Hawaii Ski Club has been supporting our Waikiki Aquarium with much needed
(and much appreciated) manpower during their annual fund raising evening concert
series and during occasional community events, often for children, held on their
premises. Volunteers assist with such tasks as setting up and taking down tables
and chairs, hanging posters, policing entrances, empting trash containers, and
serving food. The Aquarium has again requested our assistance for the following two events:
April 9th
(Sat)- Earth Day
April 16th (Sat) - Seahunt (Easter Event)
Please
contact Wandi,
sagumw001@hawaii.rr.com , if you
wish to work either or both of these events.

PAU HANA AT PABLO'S (OR PABLO MCGINTY'S) CANTINA
Friday, April 29,
4:30 P.M.
Pablo's Cantina or Pablo McGinty's Cantina (they now seem to be de-emphasizing their Irish last name) has taken over the old, vacant Comprades site on the second floor of Ward Center to the immediate left (looking in the ocean direction) of Ryan's. The menu is a little different, but margaritas are magaritas, beer is beer, and the ambience on the lanai is the same---especially after a few--- unless it rains. The early start time (4:30) is so I/we can score a table which, I am sure, will start expanding as more members drift in. Hasta Luego! Ole'

PAU HANA AT SCHOONERS
Friday the 13th (eiiiiih!!)
of May 5:00 P.M.
Unlike last month's Pau Hana at Pablo's, this month we will have a reserved section so join the Ski Club's "Pau Hana Hui" for a Pau Hana at Schooners, Pearl Harbor on Friday, May 13. Relax with a cold one while watching the water lap gently against the boats in the harbor and the sun set slowly over the horizon (Corny, huh?). Schooners is located at 57 Arizona Memorial Road just past the Ford Island Road overpass. Turn off of Kamemeha Highway as if you were going to visit the Arizona Memorial, take a right onto Arizona Memorial Road, drive down the road a short ways, go under the Ford Island overpass, and you will see Schooners on the left. Should be plenty of free parking.

ALASKAN CRUISE
July 17-25
In July, a number of Hawaii Ski Club members
will be going from from Vancouver to Seward, Alaska, sailing on
Holland America's 7-Day Glacier Discovery Cruise. Departing Vancouver on
July 16, they will be sailing up the the Inside Passage, visiting
Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, cruising through Glacier Bay and College Fjord,
arriving in Seward on July 24th, bussing to Anchorage on July 24th, and
returning to Vancouver the following day.
Although the cruise is already sold-out,
I'm sure Wandi Sagum, who has coordinated it, will be initiating a "last minute
appeal for replacements" in case of dropouts.

PAST SKI CLUB ACTIVITIES:
FOURTEEN SKI CLUB MEMBERS QUALIFY FOR NASTAR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Believe it or not, fourteen of our Hawaii Ski Club members qualified, at Telluride, to compete in the National NASTAR championships held a few days ago (March 22 - 24) at Winter Park, Colorado. Through some arcane formula which I hardly understand, each ski area which holds NASTAR races comes up with a list of age and gender qualifiers in each medal category from all the races they have held during the year, and those qualifiers, if they wish, can go to compete at the national championships. For the Alpine Skiing Division, it is the top 3 in each category. Also, contrary to what we announced in the last Newsletter, there is an official "Snowboard" category, and for the snowboarders, it is the top 12. Of the 223 Telluride qualifiers from this season, 14 were from the Hawaii Ski Club.
Jo Yee, 1st, F 75 - 79, Bronze
Geof Chu, 2nd, M55 - 59, Snowboard
James Takara, 2nd, M 70 - 74,
Silver Glen
Lindbo, 1st, M50 - 54, Snowboard
Steve Spielman, 3rd, M 55 - 59, Gold
Suzen Murakoshi, 1st, F 40 - 44, Snowboard
Jackie Loui, 3rd, F 55 - 59,
Bronze
Susan Murata, 1st, F 45 - 49, Snowboard
Anita Hodges, 1st, F 60 - 64,
Silver
Dennis Nakaoka, 1st, M 55 - 59, Snowboard
Jonathan Carr, 1st, M 65 - 69,
Bronze Craig
Shaffer, 3rd, M 55 - 59, Snowboard
Lori Auhl, 1st, F 70-74, Silver
David Schwartz, 1st, M 60 - 64, Snowboard
If I understand this correctly, the places listed are the places each skier/snowboarder attained, in his/her category, from all the races held at Telluride during the 2010-2011 seasons. Can you believe it? GREAT GOING "GUYS" !!!! GEEV 'EM!!!!!!!!
-----And thank you, Steve and Jackie, for tracking this info.

SNOWMASS, 2011
It was a successful
return trip to Snowmass for the 23 ski club members who took advantage of
the great snow conditions and short lift lines. Despite having a flight
cancelled from Denver to Aspen for 7 of the members, spirits were high and
appetites were up at the Crestwood condos. (We ended up doing a beautiful 4
hour bus ride from Denver to Aspen and Howard Dashesfsky was also on our bus).
The Crestwood graciously hosted a wine/beer/cheese party for us on Saturday and
the Club picked up the tab for a pizza party in one of the condos on Wednesday
night.
I was reminded again that it is advantageous for our members
to book through the club when I saw a single day lift ticket at Aspen/Snowmass
cost an outrageous $104 per day! Our group rate garnered us a ticket at $69/day.
The last day was full of it - powder that is! It snowed all day Thursday with
another 6" overnight creating wonderful conditions.
Aloha Snowmass
and the Crestwood - until we meet again.

PAU HANA AT THE HARD ROCK CAFE
March 4, 2011
A boisterous band of 18 & 1/8th (you had to be there to understand the 1/8th part) braved rainy weather and Waikiki traffic to gather for great food and fellowship at the New Hard Rock for Pau Hana. Hosted by our cheerful server Tatum, and assisted by “new guy” Dave we enjoyed happy hour drinks while eyeing the extensive menu for something good to munch on. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the Happy Hour Pupu discount since we weren’t sitting at the “Wave Bar” we were pleasantly surprised that there was a 20% Kamaaina discount in effect off the entire menu! Needless to say everyone got their fill of food, drink, and fun!
KEVIN
MAKAPUU TRAIL HIKE
8 of our ski club members met on March 13 at
8 am to wend their way through scores of folks bringing their dogs, toddlers,
strollers, and even bikes up the trail. Dozens of whale spouts were seen,
a few whales were seen breaching, and even a Monk Seal was spotted by the
shoreline by all hikers. The lighthouse at the point was a sight to behold
- bright red roof against the bold blue sea. It was an easy walk, and several
made their way down the shoreline trail for an enjoyable morning hike.
This is a good trail to go to if you want to appreciate the beauty of Hawaii in
less than two hours. Go early - there is very little shade on the trail and it
gets hot quickly. The trail is paved, hence wheelchair and stroller accessible.
