    President's Message

Where does the time go? By the time you read this, hopefully we all had a
scary time for Halloween.  Now we can look forward to the year end holidays
and all the special moments that come at that time of year. It's heart warming
to see members of the club involved with many charity efforts. Personally,
I'm glad we can help out and have a good time doing it. I've heard praise
on the interesting activities that the club has done lately. I thought it
was a kick to see dolphins up close and explore a battleship.  Check
    out the stories that follow.

Many thanks goes to the members and board who set these up.  I'd like
to hear from the new members on events they would like the club to do.
Your suggestions are an opportunity for us to get to know each other better
and do something we enjoy. Now I have to run off an enjoy the World Series.
See you all at the Yum Yum. Dave

    Renewal Time

Thanks to all of those members who have gotten
their renewals in. If you didn't, bring your checkbook to the November meeting.
Don't make me send one of those Maniacs who were going down the Shaka Waterslide
with their eyes closed after you.  (See membership renewal form
at the end of the newsletter.)

    Upcoming Events:

General Meeting at the YUM YUM TREE
    - November 7, 6 p.m.
Eat, Drink, Find out more about upcoming events.

    Pau Hana at Kapono's - November 15, 5:30
    p. m.
Location: Aloha Tower - The last Pau Hana here went really well. Good Pupus,
Great Location. The parking situation there is much improved.

North Shore Waterfall Hike - Nov 17,
    8:30 a.m.
This hike is about four miles total, two miles
up and two miles back down the Laie trail. It takes us to a local waterfall/swimming
pond. I would describe this hike as EZ with well defined trails and gentle
slopes. This will be 4+ hour event. Plan on meeting at
the baseball field around 8:30 am
(see direction below). I recommend using sunscreen, bringing at least 2 quarts
of drink, lunch, a hat, hiking shoes, sunglasses, cell phone (if you have
one) and wearing as much white as possible (easier to spot from the air if
necessary). This hike should offer beautiful views, local vegetation, swimming
opportunities (bring your swim suit) and lots of exercise.

Starting Point Directions:  LAIE baseball diamond parking
    lot - Time 8:15 - 8:30 am

From Kaneohe, drive north to Laie. Take the fourth left after the entrance
to the Mormon Temple. From Kahuku, take the second right after Malaekahana
Beach. This is Naniloa Loop. Enter a traffic circle, take the second right
    - Poohaili. Park on the left near a baseball field. I estimate this trip to
be a good 12 to 13 miles.  If interested in this hike or you have any
questions about it please contact Bill Rothe by email at rothebil@hcc.hawaii.edu or 239-4332.

Pre-Thanksgiving Pot Luck at the Rotheskeller
    (Bill Rothe's House) - Nov 24  at 3 p.m.
Those of you who have been to any of the previous events at Bill's House know
that this is not an event to miss. For those of you who haven't been yet it
is a great place for a party. If you want good food and a lot of fun check
    it out.

Directions to Bill Rothe's house:  From the Honolulu side of the island
take the Likelike or the H-3 (to the Likelike ) to Kaneohe. Make a left at
Kahekili Hwy (the exit is off the right lane of the Likelike just pasted the
H3 overpass). Follow the Kahekili go one light past the Valley of the Temples
Memorial park (about two miles) to Hui Iwa and turn left. Proceed straight
through the four way stop sign and take the second left (at the top of the
hill) which will be Hui Kelu St.  47-461 Hui Kelu St. is about 1/2 mile
from their on the left side of the street (two houses past the orange house).
If you get lost just call me at 239-4332 and tell me were you are. ( Bill
    Rothe)

    TURKEY, TURKEY, TURKEY

THANKSGIVING DAY  - THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2002 at NEAL
    BLAISDELL CENTER (NBC)

    TAILGATE: 9:00 A.M. VOLUNTEER WORK: 10:45A.M.-1:00P.M.

Lee has her volunteers but call her if you want to be on the wait list. Last
year the club was a person short. This is our 13th year, "SAMO-SAMO." It's
still a Thursday, as Thanksgiving usually is. (There seems to have always
been someone in the crowd who asks, "What day is that?").  The event
at NBC is not to be confused with our pre-Thanksgiving  Feast, which
is generally the weekend before Thanksgiving Day.  In a repeat performance
of our many successful Turkey tailgates in the NBC parking lot (before AND
after the volunteer work), we will continue the $5 per-person donation, payable
by the November 7th meeting to Lee, to cover the cost of the Tailgate Tasties.
One aspect that has definitely changed from recent years is that I (Lee) can
no longer handle all the food items without more assistance -- and, as a reminder,
those in attendance last year, agreed to do some Costco runs or whatever for
    2002.

    In case you Missed it:

Pau Hana at Buca Di Beppo
Pretty good crowd. We ended up with two outside tables. My
table had a Pizza and mussels and the other table went for a couple of massive
pasta dishes.  Buca is a great place to be with a crowd because when
they say that they are the home of the "freakishly large entree" they aren't
    kidding.

    Makaha Dolphin Swim

This would have been a giant success if the dolphins had cooperated.
Jackie and Steve brought a lot of extra boards and food and we had an enthusiastic
if somewhat sleep deprived crowd. Unfortunately the Dolphins made their last
pass through the area right around 7 before everything was organized. The
location is beautiful however and I had a good time despite the absence of
    any close cetacean encounters.

    SS Missouri Tour

On Sunday, 20 Oct, eleven stalwart SAOH members took the grand
Explorer's Tour of the Mighty Mo.  Armed with day-glow vests, flashlights,
hard hats and water bottles, we toured approximately one and a half miles
through staterooms, galleys, gun turrets, fire control, laundry and, of course,
the brig!  After three and half hours of guided tour, we could go about
on our own to see the foredeck, pilot house, forward aiming station, etc.
The ship is three football fields long with six or seven decks open to the
public, so you get your exercise.  (Chris Harris)
