President's Message

Aloha, welcome to the newsletter. Please take the time to peruse it. There are some fun activities listed here and it would be great to see a good turn out. Based on the "good time" ratio at a recent club event, (Waimanalo camp out). I would say there appears to be some momentum building for a fun year with the Ski Club. Lets Keep it Rolling. I'd want to thank the board for their efforts. It would not be happening without them. Please give them your support to make the club the best it can be for all of us. I want to wish everyone a happy fourth of July. Please take a moment to remember what it stands for in the USA. We'll see you at the club events and at the YUM YUM on 7/11. Have fun, Dave

Upcoming Events
July 4 - Fireworks, Picnic and Party - Schofield Barracks
When: Thursday, July 4
Time: 12:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Where: Schofield Barracks - Site #26
What to Bring: Yourself (and a friend, if you like!), something to BBQ, a dish to share, your favorite beverage, sun tan lotion, and a chair or mat to sit on and the usual picnic items. Also wear your most patriotic outfit!!
The Ski Association has rented site #26 where we will set up a tent as a place to gather, eat, and talk story. From 12 to 8 p.m. you will be entertained by live bands, a kiddie carnival, craft fair, food and drink booths just to name a few things that will be going on. The fireworks start at 8 p.m. and are the best in the state. The Club will provide the tent and I will bring the barbecue (I hope I can get the BBQ there and not all over Kam Highway again!). We will fire up the BBQ around 3:00 so everyone will have time to cook their food, eat, and relax until it is time to take down the tent before it gets dark and to get ready for the fireworks. The earlier you get there, the easier the parking!
The Ski Association pays for the site rental using your membership dollars so we hope you will come out and join us for a good time. See you there. Any questions? Call Jim Kelly.

July 5 Martinis & Bikinis
Join us at the (HOT) Summer Night Beach Party at the Honolulu Elks Lodge on 7/5 from 6p to 10pm.
Limbo Dance Contest, Guessing Games, Trivia Games, Twister, Special Drinks and Pupus. Beach Party Attire.
There will be a Ski Association Sign up Sheet at the Reception Desk of the Elks. Please sign under Lee Cataldi's name. See you in your bikini or speedo!!!!!
General Meeting- July 11 Yum Yum Tree -
Please note that the meeting is on the 11th because of fireworks on the 4th. If you haven't been to a general meeting recently you should definitely check it out. The early bird menu has been working out really well and there are lots of convenient locations for after meeting socializing.
Saturday- July 13- Box Car Racing 5 pm

Ski Association's Annual Grand Prix
Get your racing gear out and get ready for an exciting night at the race track! On July 13 at 5pm we will be having our annual race at the American Box Car Race Track. The exciting news is that they have the new track done. It is supposed to be even more fun with banked turns and the whole bit! The Ski Association will again have it's own class so we will only be racing against our group.
For those of you who have never participated in this event and don't know what I am talking about, we will be racing cars like the old Soap Box Derby cars on a downhill curvy track. They are going to select four cars from the Mayors Cup for us to use. Originally for the kids, the adults soon learned that it is just as much fun for us. You really should come out and try it. Practice starts at 5:00 p.m. If you have never raced, you must have driver training and practice before you race. I would suggest that everyone come practice even if you have raced before since it is a new track. You will not be allowed to start from the top unless you have mastered the turns in practice. The Drivers' Meeting is at 6:45 with racing starting right after. The cost is $10.00 payable that night.
The American Box Car Race Track (ABCRI) is located behind Sam's Club on Acacia Road in Pearl City. If you are coming from town on Kam Highway, turn right at the light before Sam's Club. If you are coming from Ewa, turn left at the light before Sam's Club. As soon as you turn the corner you will be able to see the track on the right side of the road.
You must wear a helmet - please bring your bike or rollerblading helmet if you have one. You must also wear covered toe shoes and if you plan on wiping out - wear long pants! Bring something to drink and pupus to share between races. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ARE NOT ALLOWED!! (But we may be able to find some place afterwards to take care of that thirst!) Questions? Call Vel Kelly.

In Case you Missed it - Past Events

June 14 Pau Hana-
Waterfront Cafe & Cabaret - Aloha Tower Market Place -
Good pupus ( many of which were half-price for happy hour), reasonable drink prices and a nice location. They gave us a long table out by the dock. Kudos to the flying nurse for a good pau hana suggestion.
June 22- Beach Campfire
KAYAK KAPAPA -
Well you missed a great event. Despite the heavy rain in the am, we had a BEAUTIFUL afternoon and night at Bellows. Gentle breezes ocean side under gorgeous pines.
We had quite the experienced campers with enough (large) tents to house the entire association (I think). Bill brought enough wood to burn for an entire week! Our campfire could have indeed been a Bonfire! Gay brought 2 large, fully stuffed Aku that nearly destroyed Jim's grill but was very tasty! Amy tried her hand as Madame Pele at the quite successful campfire with plenty of S' mores for all. (Editor's note - Amy was in charge of fire but Bill Rothe was the S' mores chef)
Thanks to everyone for making it a night to remember!!
Jim and Vel, Shereen, Bill, Denise, Amy and Dave, James and Mary, Jackie and Steve, Craig,Gay, Andy, Mike and Del, Omer, Bill and Anita, Wendy, and Lisa.
Already planning our next camp out at Barber's Point!!
Taste of Honololu
The ski association was once again represented at the Taste of Honolulu. Lisa and Wanda were serving food at the Le Bistro booth and Anita was at the Kapono's booth. I'm told Hans was in the wine tent. Lee Cataldi, Shereen and Roseanne came by afterwards to make sure they survived. Lots of good food and a good cause. Thanks to Anita for organizing the volunteering.
